Volunteer Mair - Patient Driver

Mair has been a volunteer driver since 2014, volunteering twice a week to bring patients to our hospice from across Cardiff. Here, Mair tells us how she got involved with volunteering with George Thomas Hospice Care. Mair is a fluent Welsh speaker and has kindly written this piece bilingually.

Roedd fy niweddar ŵr yn dioddef o gancr a bu’r Hosbis yn gymorth mawr iddo yn ystod ei waeledd.  Dyma wnaeth fy ysbrydoli i ddechrau gwirfoddoli yn 2014.

Rwy’n cludo cleifion ddwywaith yr wythnos o’u cartref i’r Hosbis ac yn ôl i fynychu grwpiau therapi.

Mae’n bleser eu gweld yn mwynhau sgwrsio, rhannu profiadau, a chwerthin ynghyd â’r amrywiol weithgareddau sy’n cael ei drefnu ar eu cyfer yn y cyfarfodydd wythnosol;  cyngherddau, gweithdai, cwisiau a llawer mwy.

bydd gwên lydan ar ei wyneb/hwyneb ar y ffordd adref o’r grŵp!

Rwy’n cael boddhad mawr yn cwrdd â phobol ddiddorol o wahanol gefndiroedd ac mae’n gysur gweld cymaint mae’r cleifion yn elwa o gael mynychu’r sesiynau wythnosol.

Ambell dro bydd rhywun yn edrych yn drist wrth i fi ei gasglu/chasglu ond yn amlach na pheidio bydd gwên lydan ar ei wyneb/hwyneb ar y ffordd adref o’r grŵp!

Byddaf hefyd yn helpu allan yn y Siop yn Heol y Crwys o dro i dro.

Mae pawb sy’n gweithio yn yr Hosbis, yn staff ac yn wirfoddolwyr, yn gyfeillgar ac yn barod i helpu bob amser.  Rwyf wedi gwneud llawer o ffrindiau newydd dros y ddwy flynedd a hanner diwethaf.

Hefyd, mae llawer o gyfle i gymdeithasu yn ystod yr amrywiol ddigwyddiadau i godi arian i’r Hosbis.

Byddwn yn argymell i unrhyw un sydd â diddordeb mewn gwirfoddoli i’r Hosbis i wneud hynny ar bob cyfrif.

My late husband suffered from cancer and the Hospice was a great help to him during his illness.  This is what inspired me to start volunteering in 2014.

I drive patients from their home to the Hospice and back to attend therapy groups twice weekly.

It gives me much pleasure to see them enjoying a chat, sharing experiences and having a laugh as well as the varied activities arranged for them in the weekly meetings;  concerts, workshops, quizzes and a whole lot more.

I enjoy meeting interesting people from different backgrounds and it’s comforting to see how much the patients enjoy and benefit from attending the groups.

Sometimes when I pick someone up to go to group he/she looks sad but more often than not there is a broad smile on his/her face on the way home from group!

I also help out occasionally in the Shop in Crwys Road.

Everyone that works at the Hospice, staff and volunteers, are very friendly and supportive at all times.  I’ve made a lot of new friends over the past two and a half years.  There are plenty of opportunities to socialise during the various fund raising events.

I would most definitely encourage others to become a volunteer.
