Volunteering Roles

alt

Our volunteering roles are varied and include something to suit all skills and personalities whether you are looking to volunteer on a weekly basis or on an ad hoc basis.

Charity Shop Assistants

We currently have 6 Charity Shops throughout Cardiff and Vale of Glamorgan. The locations are detailed in the Shops section of our website.

All the shops are manned and managed entirely by volunteers, who greatly enjoy their work and have an excellent team spirit.

The shops raise valuable funds and help to promote our presence in the community. Activities within the shops range from working on the till to dressing the windows, and no two days are ever the same.

Volunteers in the shop do either a morning or afternoon shift which is normally three and a half hours per week. Full training will be provided.

Drivers

We need drivers to help with patients and with events. Driving for the hospice involves using your own vehicle for which a mileage allowance can be reimbursed.

Driving patients involves collecting patients from thier home and bringing them to the Hospice for a day care session, then taking them home again. Currenlty the sessions are 1.30pm - 3.30pm. This role requires a Criminal Records Bureau check and a full, clean driving licence.

Our events are a vital part of our fundraising activities and we need drivers who can help by transporting display boards, literature etc to and from our venues.

Reception

Manning the reception desk at the Hospice Centre involves answering the telephone, transferring calls, taking and relaying messages and welcoming visitors to the Centre. As often the first point of contact with us for patients and their families, the Receptionist role is a very important one and one we greatly value. Appropriate training is given as required.

Daycare Hosts / Hostesses

Afternoons at the Hospice centre are set aside for the use of patients’ Daycare activities. These sessions can be structured courses such as Fatigue Management or more informal groups that include recreational activities and social events. They are of great mutual support to patients and their families. Volunteers serve refreshments and interact with the patients. This role requires a Criminal Records Bureau check.

Administration Support

Our small administration team at the Centre are incredibly busy and very grateful for any administrative help they can get. Administration support can be a varied role and include mail outs, photocopying, laminating, re-stocking leaflets and merchandise, data input and general other office duties. Where the volunteer has specific skills such as IT, spreadsheets etc then we will endevour to utilise these skills.

Fundraising and Collections

Fundraising is crucial to being able to provide our service, as only one quarter of our required income comes from statutory sources, and we have to raise the large bulk of monies needed ourselves each year.

Volunteers can help with fundraising by assisting with an event (see the fundraising section for forthcoming events) or by taking part in bucket collections.

Collections are a valuable source of income and can be in Supermarkets, Rugby Matches, Queens Arcade, St Davids Hall, etc. Generally volunteers do a 2 hour shift.

Task Force

We are in the process of building a task force of volunteers that are able to help with campaigns. Typically it would be a team that would work over a few weeks to promote a particular campaign such as Light Up a Life. How much time you spend is up to you, it could be a few full days or a few hours a week over several weeks.
