Consultant and Clinical Nurse Specialists
A consultant (doctor) or clinical nurse specialist (CNS) in palliative care is a qualified doctor or nurse who has undertaken specialised training in palliative care. This means that they have the specific skills needed to provide information and advice about management of an illness, its treatment and any medicines that are needed.
The consultant and CNS work closely to use their specialist knowledge to help patients understand their illness which in turn can reduce unnecessary anxiety and worry.
Patients will be allocated a CNS on referral and they will be your named contact. The amount of contact with the CNS will vary according to need and will be discussed with you and your family. Patients can choose to be visited at home or be seen at the hospice outpatient clinic or day centre.
