- Light Up A Life
Dr Louise Bright, 35 from Cardiff who works at the University of Glamorgan, came up with the idea when her daughter was born. “We really appreciated all the lovely cards we received after the birth of our daughter, but I wondered how the money spent on them could have been used by the Special Care Baby Unit where she was born. As a result we came up with the idea for nocardsthanks.com.”
It can seem so ‘Scrooge-ish’ to say you don’t want to receive cards, but nocardsthanks.com gets around this wonderfully with a well composed email which you can send to potential well wishers and directing them to the site and stating that you’d prefer an e-card this year with the money spent on a real card going to charity.
A single e-card costs £2.99, with £2.00 going to a charity of the sender’s choice. The £0.99 covers the administration costs of the site, and every month 10% of the website’s profits are donated to a ‘charity of the month’. E-cards can also be bought in bulk, enabling users to send all their greetings cards in just a few mouse clicks. All transactions are carried out securely through Barclays.
